Rutherfoord's construction specialization led our firm to become involved in self-insurance. In 1982, we set up the Virginia Contractors Group Self Insurance Association, and since that time we have served as Administrator for this very successful program.
The Virginia Contractors Group Self Insurance Association, or VACO, provides workers' compensation and employers liability coverage to its contractor members. This non-profit group pays any surplus and investment income to its members, and is not affiliated with any contractor association to which it must pay an override percentage.
VACO's coverages, premium basis and rate structure are the same for self-insurance as with standard carriers. Members pay premiums into the fund, and for every dollar of premium paid in, VACO pays out fixed expenses, claims, and dividends. Simply put-the group is refunded any monies not spent on claims or expenses.
