Chairman
Tom Rutherfoord began his career with Rutherfoord in 1971, soon moving to the Washington, D.C. area to manage the company's Alexandria, Virginia office. In 1986, Mr. Rutherfoord succeeded his father as President, and aligned the company for future growth, transitioning the firm to an ESOP company in 1991. He was named Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1998, a position he held until 2004, when he announced new senior executive positions. Continuing as Chairman, Mr. Rutherfoord leads an effective Board, while focusing on strategy and business development. He also serves as President of Rutherfoord International, an affiliated company founded in 1989. Mr. Rutherfoord is a member of the Chief Executive Organization and the World Presidents' Organization and is active with various civic and cultural groups.
Thomas R. Brown
Chief Executive Officer
Tom Brown began his insurance career with Rutherfoord in Roanoke in 1979. In 1983, he opened the Richmond, Virginia office and managed the growth of that office to over 70 people. Mr. Brown was named President in 1998 and Chief Executive Officer in 2004. He is a member of the Board of Directors and has been instrumental in positioning Rutherfoord as a major regional firm for the last 25 years. Mr. Brown is active in the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers and Assurex Global. In addition, he serves on numerous insurance company advisory boards at a corporate level. He is a member of various civic boards and the Young Presidents Organization.
George A. (Shad) Steadman, III
President/Chief Operating Officer
As President and COO, Shad Steadman has ultimate responsibility for all facets of corporate operations. He has more than 30 years experience in the insurance industry, working for a number of leading insurance companies and brokerages in various managerial and executive roles and as a risk management consultant. Mr. Steadman joined Rutherfoord in 1986 and has successfully contributed in leading the company to be the 42th largest commercial insurance brokerage firm in the United States.
Mr. Steadman obtained his Bachelor of Business Administration in Risk Management and Insurance from the University of Georgia, and has also attained the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation. Mr. Steadman was recently appointed the 2008 chairman of The Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (CIAB). The CIAB represents the leading domestic and international insurance agents and brokers who annually place 80 percent of the commercial property/casualty premiums and administer billions of dollars in employee benefits accounts in the United States. He is also a member of the board of managers for Assurex Global Reinsurance Company and is the former National Chairman of CouncilPAC and former President of Assurance Capital Consultants, Inc.
William B. Mason
Executive Vice President - Operations
Bill Mason has management oversight of Operations which includes responsibility for budgetary oversight, technological advancements and quality improvement initiatives. He and Bob Bamberger, EVP, Sales, share oversight of Thomas Rutherfoord offices, Rutherfoord Benefit Services, and Assurance Services Corporation. Mr. Mason joined Rutherfoord in 2001, after 25 years of major brokerage experience with Marsh & McLennan, Johnson & Higgins and the company that resulted from their merger. At Marsh, Mr. Mason managed the middle market group, was chairman of a local Innovation Committee, was on the National Casualty committee, and was Client Executive Practice Leader in Risk Management. He also served as a technical resource and as the client executive for a number of the large risk management clients. Mr. Mason entered the insurance field in 1974 was USF&G after receiving a Bachelor of Science in Management from McIntire School of Commerce at The University of Virginia, Charlottesville.
Robert A. Bamberger
Executive Vice President - Sales
Bob Bamberger is the Sales Leader for the company with responsibilities for the development and execution of company-wide sales strategies, growing various Rutherfoord divisions and mentoring several high potential producers. Additionally, he serves as client executive for larger middle market and risk management clients, particularly in the construction and real estate segments. Mr. Bamberger graduated with a Business Management degree from Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania in 1976, and began his insurance career with Aetna Casualty & Surety that same year. In 1980, he joined Marsh & McLennan where he served in production, client management and business leadership roles over the next 18 years. Mr. Bamberger joined Rutherfoord in 1997.
Bradford R. Buie
Chief Financial Officer
Brad Buie oversees all Accounting, Finance and Treasury functions for Rutherfoord. Mr. Buie completed his education at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill earning a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration in 1975. He also earned an accounting degree at the University of Tennessee, Nashville, and his MBA from Radford University, Radford, Virginia. Mr. Buie completed his CPA designation in 1982. Mr. Buie began his career as Controller for Kelly Lyn Stores in Nashville, Tennessee. In 1982, he joined Food Lion Stores, Inc., as Budgeting and Analysis Manager and was promoted to Corporate Controller in 1985. Mr. Buie joined Rutherfoord in 1989 as Controller/Vice President, Finance and was promoted to Senior Vice President, Finance in 1998. He also serves as Corporate Treasurer and ESOP Trustee. Mr. Buie is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA), the Virginia Society of Certified Public Accountants (VSCPA) and he has served on the VSCPA Insurance Committee.
Kimberly A. Carr Enochs
Senior Vice President, Human Resources
Kim Enochs is responsible for overseeing Rutherfoord’s Human Resources, Training and Development, Licensure and Marketing/Communications functions. Ms. Enochs graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Concord College in Athens, West Virginia, and earned her Masters of Science in Industrial/Organizational Psychology at Radford University, Radford, Virginia. Ms. Enochs holds the designation as Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and was one of fifty national H.R. professionals nationally chosen to participate in The Wharton School’s Strategic Decision Making and Human Resources Certificate Program in 2004. Ms. Enochs began her Human Resources career in 1988 and joined Rutherfoord in 2002 after working at Carilion Health System in Roanoke, Virginia, as Director of Human Resources Planning and Staffing. Ms. Enochs also serves as Rutherfoord’s Corporate Secretary and as a Trustee for Rutherfoord’s ESOP. She is a Sustaining Member and past Board Member of the Junior League of Roanoke Valley.
Marilyn G. Norman
Senior Vice President - Operations
Marilyn is responsible for operation initiatives, including deployment of technology solutions and market relations. Prior to joining Rutherfoord, Marilyn was Vice President of Marketing at The Hanover Insurance Group in Worchester, Massachusetts. She has also held executive positions at Zurich, St. Paul and other brokerage and carrier firms. Marilyn holds a CPCU designation and has more than 30 years of experience in the carrier and brokerage industry in both underwriting and management.
